Russian President Putin said he will visit China in May, but did not specify a specific time.
“The visit was planned for May,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said at a business forum in Moscow today.
The Kremlin and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs have not yet commented on the information.
Information about Mr. Putin’s visit to China appeared in March. Sources familiar with the matter said the visit could take place in the second half of May, before Chinese President Xi Jinping begins his trip to Europe. The Kremlin then said it would make a specific announcement closer to the departure date.
Russia and China agreed on an “unlimited” strategic partnership in February 2022. The two sides then repeatedly affirmed the strength of their relationship, with bilateral trade turnover growing.
Experts say Russia and China are moving closer together amid increasing tensions with the West. In September 2023, the Kremlin boss also described that relations between Moscow and Beijing had reached an “unprecedented level” and would continue to strengthen.
In the context of Europe seeking to cut energy relations with Russia, Moscow is looking east to export oil and gas. Despite strengthening economic relations, the leaders of Russia and China have repeatedly affirmed that the two countries do not want to seek a military or political alliance, rejecting concerns from the West.
