“There has been a new topic: nuclear deterrence. Those who brought us towards this topic should know about it, and have a reasonable view of the direct consequences of their ill-considered decisions,” the Belarusian leader said.

Tass news agency quoted Mr. Lukashenko as saying that “several dozen” Russian tactical nuclear weapons have been deployed in Belarus according to the agreement that he and President Vladimir Putin announced in 2023. This is also the first time Russia has deployed nuclear missiles abroad since the days of the former Soviet Union.

Also according to President Lukashenko, the risk of a military incident along Belarus’s border with Ukraine is quite high.

He said Poland, a western neighbor of Belarus and a NATO member, should not expect aggressive actions from Minsk. However, Belarus has also moved a number of battalions in combat readiness from the east to the west of the country.
