Mr. Macron called for important policy changes when speaking before his European Union (EU) counterparts at Sorbonne University (France) on April 25.
According to RT, Mr. Macron warned that Europe was facing life and death and “could die”. This depends on the choice of block.
The French leader called for “strategic autonomy” for Europe, especially regarding military production. He reiterated that member states should spend more on defense and give priority to domestically produced weapons. Mr. Macron explained that this would reduce the EU’s dependence on the US.
President Macron also emphasized that the EU must prove that “the bloc is never a vassal of the US” and knows how to talk to all other regions of the world.
He also advocates for sweeping revisions to policies on fair trade, production standards and other areas that affect the competitiveness of European businesses.
The French president argued that the EU being the only party respecting trade rules would be ineffective if China and the US no longer respected them while still subsidizing important sectors.
Mr. Macron sees Russia’s “uninhibited” behavior as the main threat to Europe. Russia still believes that the EU shot itself in the foot by following the US and participating in what it considers a proxy war against Russia, typically in Ukraine.
