In two articles on January 24 about Huu Can Tran’s efforts to investigate the motive of the crime, the newspaper New York Times and Washington Post said the 72-year-old suspect was born in Vietnam.

Both major US newspapers reported that the suspect came to the US in the late 1980s, naturalized in 1990 or 1991. Continuing to cite “documents from the court”, New York Times Huu Can Tran was married in 2001 and divorced six years later.

New York Times and Washington Post do not make public the file number or court document containing the above information.

Earlier, on social media, a photo of a naturalization application form was circulated on social media, believed to belong to the suspect Tran. The declaration dated June 1990, the person named Huu Can Tran was born in 1950 in Vietnam.

Police searched the suspect’s home after the shooting at the Star Ballroom in Monterey Park, California.

In the mobile home of suspect Huu Can Tran, a gun, multiple bullets and parts were found to be used to make gun silencers. Tran was arrested in 1990 for illegal gun possession.

Police have not yet revealed the motive for the shooting, but suspect Huu Can Tran only focused on a few acquaintances. This is consistent with the statements of some witnesses that they saw the suspect standing for a long time as if looking for someone.

Not excluding psychological instability

On January 7 and 9, the suspect went to the police station in Hemet city to report.

There, Huu Can Tran accused his family of trying to poison him and staged a scam to get his money. Police asked the suspect to go home and return with concrete evidence, but he never returned.

After shooting at the Star Ballroom, Huu Can Tran drove to Lai Lai ballroom. Here, a programmer named Brandon Tsay bravely stripped the suspect’s gun, preventing a tragedy from happening.

Police believe Huu Can Tran went to Lai Lai to find some people he didn’t see at the Star Ballroom. Both of these ballrooms are home to many middle-class Asians.

Some acquaintances of Huu Can Tran described him as a short-tempered and difficult person. The suspect often clashed with people at the two ballrooms, repeatedly disparaging the instructors there. He also prides himself on being someone who knows how to dance and dance better than others.
