The car carrying his wife Akie Abe was hit by a police car today (July 25).
Information from Reuters said that the car carrying Ms. Akie was slowing down to change lanes when it was hit by the escort vehicle of the Metropolitan Police Department. The accident happened at 8:45 a.m. in the Chiyoda district of Tokyo.
“I was distracted by changing lanes and didn’t pay close attention to the car carrying Mrs. Abe,” said the policeman who was driving the car that caused the accident. Police confirmed no one was injured.
At the following press conference, Director of the National Police Agency Itaru Nakamura apologized for this negligence. “As a police officer, I seriously admit that I have not fulfilled my responsibility when protecting important figures,” he said.
“We will train more thoroughly and make more efforts to avoid similar incidents,” Tokyo police said.
